Lake Tana
Often the first stop on Ethiopia’s northern circuit, the lakeside town of Bahir Dar serves as the gateway to Lake Tana. The lake’s calm waters are home to flamingos, hippos, and a network of ancient monasteries hidden on its forested islands—each holding centuries of history and mystery waiting to be explored.

Lake Tana at a glance
Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake, holding nearly 50% of the country’s inland water. Its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystem have earned it recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Surrounding the lake is one of Africa’s most extensive wetland systems, a vital stop for migratory birds and home to thriving colonies of Great White Pelicans.
Scattered across the lake are dozens of islands, many of which house 14th-century monasteries filled with ancient relics, colorful frescoes, and centuries-old religious art.
Ancient Monasteries on Lake Tana
Lake Tana is best known for its ancient island monasteries—timeless sanctuaries that seem untouched by the modern world.
A short boat ride from the lake’s edge brings you to these sacred sites, where stone churches and faded frescoes offer a glimpse into Ethiopia’s deep religious past. While there are dozens of monasteries scattered across the islands, only eight are open to visitors.
They can easily be explored in a half-day trip, making for a peaceful and culturally rich experience.
Monasteries on The Islands
Debre Maryam is one of the more recent monasteries on Lake Tana, built in the 19th century by Emperor Tewodros. Despite its age, it holds great cultural value, with a warm and welcoming priest often guiding visitors through its ancient manuscripts and relics.
The monastery is reached by boat, followed by a peaceful walk through groves of coffee, mango, and fig trees. For the adventurous, it’s also possible to rent a traditional tankwa papyrus boat from locals—about 20 minutes up the road toward Gondar, just before the Nile bridge.
Perched on a hill about 100 meters above Lake Tana, Daga Estefanos is one of the lake’s most sacred and historically significant monasteries. A short uphill trek leads you to its gates, where centuries of Ethiopian heritage are preserved.
Inside, you’ll find vibrant ceremonial robes, a 16th-century painting of the Madonna, and the mummified remains of five Ethiopian emperors, displayed in glass coffins for visitors to see. Reaching the island takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by boat from Bahir Dar at moderate speed. Please note that, due to religious tradition, entry is permitted to men only.
Narga Selassie — meaning “Trinity of the Rest” — was built in the late 18th century by Empress Mentewab on Dek Island, Lake Tana’s largest isle . Nestled amidst lush surroundings, this circular stone church is celebrated for its grand, peaceful setting and exquisitely painted interior
The journey from Bahir Dar to Narga Selassie takes around 3 to 3½ hours by moderate-speed boat—offering scenic lake views before arriving at this serene spiritual retreat
Tana Cherkos is a small island monastery on the eastern side of Lake Tana. According to local legend, the Ark of the Covenant was hidden here for about 800 years before being moved to Aksum
The island is rimmed with dense forest and is a habitat for majestic African fish eagles, adding to its serene atmosphere
A trip from Bahir Dar to Tana Cherkos takes around three hours by moderate-speed boat
Kebran Gabriel is one of the oldest and most architecturally striking monasteries on Lake Tana. Founded in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 17th, it sits closest to Bahir Dar and features a distinctive round roof supported by twelve carved stone pillars, symbolizing the twelve apostles.
The monastery is just a 20-minute boat ride from Bahir Dar and is often included as a stop on the way to the Zege Peninsula. As with many traditional monasteries in the region, entry is permitted to men only due to religious customs.
Sadly, despite its reputation as one of the most beautiful and atmospheric monasteries on the lake, Kebran Gabriel is no longer open to the public.
Monasteries on the Zege Peninsula
The rich forests on the Zege Peninsula are home to seven ancient monasteries waiting for you to visit. The peninsula can easily be reached by boat or bicycle from Bahir Dar.
Ura Kidane Mehret is often considered the most beautifully decorated monastery in the Lake Tana region. A short 25-minute walk from the boat landing takes you through shaded coffee plantations to reach this sacred site.
Inside, the monastery is adorned with vibrant frescoes that depict Ethiopian saints, biblical scenes, and key moments in the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Unlike many other monasteries in the area, both men and women are welcome to enter.
Nearby, the Zege Satekela Museum offers visitors a closer look at traditional handcrafted objects and musical instruments still used by local communities today.
A brief walk through a path lined with coffee and lemon trees brings you to Bete Maryam, the oldest monastery on the Zege Peninsula. Stone columns frame and protect the beautifully preserved murals that adorn its interior, offering a glimpse into centuries of Ethiopian religious art.
With its distinctive round shape and thatched roof, this church is one of the most charming on Lake Tana. Step inside, and the vivid paintings covering its walls bring centuries of faith and tradition to life.
Bete Selassie and Tekla Haimanot are among the least visited monasteries on Lake Tana—but certainly not the least impressive. A 45-minute uphill walk from the island’s shore brings you to these hidden gems, where vivid and intricate frescoes await inside.
Their remote location and distance from the main boat launch in Bahir Dar mean they often go overlooked, especially by visitors trying to fit both monastery visits and the Blue Nile Falls into a single day. But if you’re staying longer in Bahir Dar or skipping the falls, taking the time to explore these peaceful, off-the-beaten-path monasteries is a rewarding experience.
