Harar The walled City
A living museum of culture, color, and history — Harar is Ethiopia’s ancient Islamic stronghold, with 368 alleyways, vibrant markets, and centuries-old traditions echoing through its walled heart.
5/5
Introduction
Regarded as the fourth holiest city in Islam, the ancient city of Harar is home to 99 mosques and shrines, symbolizing the 99 names of Allah known to mankind. The city’s strong Islamic roots are attributed to Sheikh Abadir Umar ar-Rida, an Arab cleric considered the spiritual founder of Harar.
The story dates back to 1216, when Sheikh Abadir journeyed from the Arabian Peninsula to Harar, married a local woman, and built the city’s first Jamia Mosque, laying the foundation of its religious identity.
Today, Harar is renowned for its vibrant culture — from bustling traditional markets and the iconic Hyena Men, to ancient wall paintings, relics, and centuries-old customs. Wandering through Harar’s narrow, winding alleyways, you’ll feel the echoes of history in every corner of this walled sanctuary.
Things to Do While in Harar
Visit The Harar Jugol Wall
Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the Harar Jugol wall stands as a monumental testament to the city’s historic resilience. Rising up to 5 meters high and stretching approximately 3.5 kilometers in length, this formidable structure once served as a protective fortress around the old city of Harar.
Originally, the wall featured five main gates — Shoa Gate, Buda Gate, Sanga Gate, Erer Gate, and Fallana Gate — each opening into one of the city’s five historic quarters.
Today, the Jugol wall remains largely intact and is more than just a barrier — it’s a symbol of Harar’s cultural identity and architectural legacy, proudly defining the city’s unique charm.
Visit the Sherif Harar City Museum
One of Harar’s most treasured cultural landmarks, the Sherif Harar City Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the city.
Steeped in history, the building is believed to have hosted the honeymoon of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw. Today, it houses a rich collection of jewelry, coins, weapons, textiles, and ancient manuscripts — representing the diverse heritage of the Amhara, Gurage, Oromo, Somali, and Argoba communities.
The museum officially opened its doors in December 2008, founded by Mr. Abdullah Ali Sherif, after whom it is named. Mr. Sherif and his family continue to serve as the curators and caretakers, preserving Harar’s unique legacy for future generations.
Feed some Hyenas
One of Harar’s most surreal and unforgettable traditions is the nightly ritual of feeding hyenas — led by the city’s legendary Hyena Man. What began in the early 20th century as a practical solution to protect livestock has evolved into a unique cultural spectacle.
In an effort to stop hyenas from attacking animals and raiding homes, Harari locals began offering raw meat outside the city walls. Over time, the hyenas adapted — choosing nightly handouts over hunting. Generations later, they still return, faithfully, to be fed by locals.
Roughly 1.5 kilometers east of the Erer Gate, through a few winding backstreets, you’ll find a dusty open field where the Hyena Man performs this wild nightly ritual. He may not speak much English, but with a 100-birr tip, you can join the action — even feed a hyena yourself… if you dare.
Market Places
Experience the Vibrant Markets of Harar
Packed with color, noise, and nonstop energy, Harar’s bustling marketplaces are a sensory experience you won’t forget. Whether you’re window shopping or diving into a buying spree, the city’s markets are the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Explore the spice market, the creative and gritty recycling market, the busy Shoa Gate market, and the iconic Erer Gate area — all reflecting Harar’s role as one of eastern Ethiopia’s most important commercial hubs.
From livestock and electronics to traditional clothing, spices, herbs, and handmade souvenirs, Harar’s markets offer a bit of everything. Wander the narrow alleys, meet local vendors, and soak in the electric atmosphere that makes Harar’s marketplace culture so unforgettable.
